OCF grant recipient SpecialEffect have reached the finals of the BT-sponsored national Technology For Good Awards, in the accessibility section.

Congratulations to SpecialEffect on their achievement, especially as the category also includes the likes of Samsung! The awards celebrate innovation in technology that makes the world a better place.

SpecialEffect put fun and inclusion back into the lives of people with physical disabilities by helping them to play video games. In 2013 they received a £5,000 grant from OCF to purchase new games equipment. By using technology ranging from modified joypads to eye-control, they are finding a way for people to play to the very best of their abilities. By levelling the playing field, they are also bringing families and friends together and having a profoundly positive impact on therapy, confidence and rehabilitation.

The charity is also shortlisted for the people’s award, which is decided via a public vote! Please donate 10 seconds of your time to vote here. You’ll see SpecialEffect to the right of Samsung’s “Smart TV”.

Watch this video (1 minute 46 seconds) to see how SpecialEffect’s work helps young people like ten-year-old James have a better quality of life. James acquired a head injury after falling off a changing table at nursery when he was just nine months old. He’s paraplegic and can really only move his head.
