The Effective Provision of Pre-school Education (EPPE) project investigated the effects of preschool education and care on children’s development for children aged 3-7 years old.

In addition to the child assessments and pre-school centre information, interviews were conducted with parents when their child entered the study. This allowed the study to investigate some of the influences affecting young children that have a significant relationship with their later intellectual and social/behavioural development. One of these was the home learning environment and allowed the development of an index to measure the quality of this. There are a range of activities that parents undertake with pre-school children which have a positive effect on their development.
