High Sheriff’s Law Lecture and Court Sermon
Tuesday 9 October, 2018
LAW LECTURE, University of Oxford Examination School
On 9th October a series of events takes place to mark the start of the Legal Year. The High Sheriff invites a distinguished speaker from the legal world to present a talk to students and other guests on a topic of law. Michael Beloff QC has this year agreed to deliver a lecture on the law and sport, linked to his many appointments, including the Court of Arbitration of Sports and many other eminent positions relating to sport.
GLOVE CEREMONY, Christ Church
Later in the afternoon there is a Glove Ceremony held in the Deanery at Christ Church. This is an event that dates back to the 16th Century, where the Lord Mayor of Oxford and the Vice Chancellor of Oxford University present a pair of white leather gloves to the Judge in Commission.
COURT SERMON, Christ Church
After the Glove Ceremony there is then a procession from the Deanery to Christ Church cathedral for the annual Court Sermon: an evensong with full choir with a distinguished speaker delivering a sermon, attended by both Town and Gown in full robes, gowns and mace bearers in attendance.
